Information Minister condoles death of legendary lyricist Gazi Mazharul Anwar

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of legendary lyricist, film director and national award winner Gazi Mazharul Anwar.

In a message of condolence, the minister said Anwar has set a unique example of pursuit songs in his whole life and it is rare in the global music arena. People’s affection is the big achievement of his rather many awards, he added.

He said Anwar has composed a number of timeless songs including ‘Joy Bangla, Banglar Joy’ and ‘ektara tui desher kotha bolre ebar bol’. He also won the ‘Ekushy Padak’ in 2002 and ‘Swadhinata Padak’ in 2021, said Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary.

The minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Anwar, who was also producer and screenwriter, passed away this morning.

He composed more than 20,000 songs on different mediums including radio, television and cinema for 60 years. He also received the National Film Award five times.
