Olympic gold medalists Margarita Mamun arrives in Dhaka with family

Olympic gold-winning gymnast Margarita Mamun arrived in Bangladesh on Saturday to inaugurate an international gymnast tournament.

Margarita Mamun has been named ‘Ambassador’ for the upcoming Bangabandhu 5th Central South Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championship, scheduled to be held from October 27-31 in Dhaka.

The Central South Asian Artistic Gymnastics will start next Thursday at the Indoor Stadium in Mirpur Dhaka. Margarita Mamun, a gold medalist in the Rhythmic Gymnastics All Around event at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, came with her family as a goodwill ambassador for the event. Her son Lebs, Russian husband Alexander, an international swimming medalist, and mother Anna Mamun have arrived in Dhaka.

Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Mamun, president of the Bangladesh Gymnastics Federation, said, “We are ready to host the international tournament. We invited the Olympic gold medalists Margarita Mamun to inaugurate the tournament”.

The president said these while unveiling the logo of the tournament at Dhaka Club on Saturday.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell, was also present at the logo unveiling ceremony, said, “We hired a portion of the National Sports Council’s ground floor for practice gymnasts. We will arrange venue allocation there as per the demand of the federation”.

Olympic gold medalists Margarita Mamun arrives in Dhaka with family

Margarita Mamun was born in Moscow to a Bangladeshi father and a Russian mother — Anna — a former rhythmic gymnast herself. Her father Abdullah Al Mamun, a Bangladeshi engineer, settled in Moscow where the gold medallist grew up.

She is the 2016 Olympic All-around champion. Her gold-winning performance also set a new Olympic record score of 76.483.

Apart from Olympic gold, she earned World All-around silver medal two times in 2015 and 2014, European Games All-around silver medal in 2015, European Championships All-around silver medal in 2016, Grand Prix Final All-around champion three times in 2015, 2014 and 2013, Russian National All-around champion three times 2011, 2012 and 2013. She retired from competitive career in rhythmic gymnastics in 2017.
