Umpire’s error in delivery count allows Omaima Sohail to bowl 7-ball over

The current edition of the ICC Women’s World Cup in Newzealand has been full of thrilling encounters and close finishes. In the ninth match of the tournament, between Pakistan and South Africa, an error from the umpire has caught the attention of cricket fans around the world.

The 27th over was delivered by Pakistan’s Omaima Sohail, and an error in ball count by the umpire allowed Omaima to bowl seven balls in that over.

The sixth ball of the over, which was supposed to be the final delivery, saw the umpire giving South Africa’s Sune Luus out trapped LBW. However, the decision was overturned after the batter asked the umpire to review the decision. As a result of all the DRS drama, the umpire lost count of the balls delivered in the over.

The match itself turned out to be a final-over thriller as South Africa defended their total with just one ball remaining. Batting first, South Africa posted a decent total of 223 runs. The total would have been much less if Pakistan’s side had taken their chances in the field. Laura Wolvaardt’s 75 and captain Sune Luus’s 62 runs guided South Africa to 223 runs.

Chasing the total, Pakistan had its moments in the shape of some good partnerships but wickets at regular intervals from South Africa helped them defend their total in the last over.
