Our country was free from Aedes mosquitoes, might come in by flights, says LGRD Minister

Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam on Sunday has said our country was free from aedes mosquitoes before but foreign flights may have brought them in. He also informed that 33,930 people have been infected by dengue in the country till October 26.

He made the disclosure at a meeting at the secretariate organised to review the activities of the city corporations and other ministries to combat dengue.

Neither we had the Aedes mosquitoes nor the disease here in Bangladesh. The mosquitoes came from foreign countries by flight or with some passengers, the minister added.

Mentioning that before 2019, Bangladesh did not suffer too much from dengue, Mr Tajul also said, ”We did not have much experience with the disease. But after 2020, we understood the viral fever more and knew which sectors needed interventions.”

The LGRD minister said the number of dengue patients in Bangladesh is less but it is uncomfortable. Why do we give the comparison (infected)? Because there were no Aedes mosquitoes here. Our country was free from dengue disease. It is coming from outside. An air passenger arrived in by flight or two mosquitoes arrived in. Two mosquitoes came to our country and somehow were infected (dengue), they bred more mosquitoes.

Mr Tajul Islam also informed that 33,930 people have been infected by dengue in the country till October 26. Although it is less than other countries, we want to do better. We want to meet the challenge.
