Khaleda Zia’s bail extended for one year

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s bail has been extended by one year in five separate cases of murder and defamation by setting fire to a bus.

The order was passed by two separate benches of the High Court after hearing a separate petition filed by Khaleda Zia to extend her bail.

The High Court has extended the bail of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for one year in five separate cases.

An HC bench led by Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz on Tuesday extended the bail order in four defamation cases filed against Khaleda Zia in Dhaka and Narail in 2018.

Another HC bench headed by Justice AKM Asaduzzaman on Monday extended the bail in a murder case filed in Cumilla in 2015.

Barrister Kayser Kamal and AHM Kamruzzaman Mamun appeared for Khaleda Zia.

Khaleda Zia has been convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for 17 years, in total, in Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases by the trial court and HC.

Considering her age and on humanitarian grounds amid the Covid-19 epidemic, the BNP chief was temporarily released from jail on March 25 last year following an executive order of the government suspending her jail sentences.

Khaleda Zia is currently staying at her residence in the capital’s Gulshan.
