AL pays homage to Sheikh Russel on his birthday

Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and different socio-cultural organizations today paid glowing homage to Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, by placing wreaths at his mazar at Banani graveyard here on his 58h birthday.

Central Leaders and activists of AL led by the party’s general secretary Obaidul Quader paid homage by placing floral wreaths at Sheikh Russel’s grave at the Banani graveyard in the capital on Monday morning.

Awami League praesidium members Begum Matia Chowdhury, Abdur Razzak, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Shahjahan Khan, joint general secretary Dipu Moni, Dr Hasan Mahmud, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Organizing Secretary Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque, Abu Saeed Al Mahmud Swapan, Advocate Afzal Hossain, Former Organizing Secretary Enamul Haque Shamim, Publicity and Publication Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, Office Secretary Barrister Biplob Barua, Cultural Secretary Ashim Kumar Ukil and many others were present at that time.

Later, leaders and activists of AL’s front and associate bodies and its left-leaning allies, including Dhaka Metropolitan North and South units paid their homages. As per the government’s announcement, the day is being observed as ‘Sheikh Russell Day’ from this year.

Sheikh Russel, also the youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi 32 no road in the capital.

But he was brutally killed along with most of his family members, including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on August 15, 1975 when he was a student of class four at University Laboratory Schoo

 President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have given separate statements on the occasion of Sheikh Russell’s birthday. Besides, various social and cultural organizations including the affiliated organizations of Awami League have taken detailed programs on the occasion of Sheikh Russell’s birthday.
