DGHS driver Malek jailed for 30 years

A court has sentenced former health department driver Abdul Malek to 30 years in prison in an arms case.

Judge Md Robiul Alam of Dhaka Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions judges court pronounced the verdict on Monday (September 20).

Accused Malek was present in the court at the time of the verdict. In response to the verdict, he claimed to reporters that no weapons were found from him. He did not get justice in this court.

Earlier, the argument hearing ended on September 13. The court fixed Monday for the verdict. Public Prosecutor (PP) Salahuddin Hawlader handled the case on behalf of the state.

Investigation Officer of the case, and Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury of RAB-1 submitted the charge-sheet in the case to the court on January 11 this year. Later, on March 11, the court framed charges against Malek in the case.

A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on September 20 last year arrested Malek for his alleged involvement in businesses of illegal arms, fake notes and other illegal activities.

The elite force later recovered a foreign-made pistol, one magazine, five bullets, fake notes of Taka 1.5 lakh, a laptop and a mobile phone from his possession.

RAB-1 Inspector (City and Transport) Alamgir Hossain, later filed two cases against Malek with Turag Police Station under the Arms Act and Special Power Act.

Abdul Malek was the driver of the transport pool of the health department. Eight class passed Abdul Malek  joined in 1982 as a driver. After four years he joined the transport pool of the department. Prior to his arrest, he was working as a driver in the transport pool of the Department of Health Education on deputation.

After Malek’s arrest, RAB said that Abdul Malek’s wife was two. In the name of his first wife Nargis Akter, there are two seven-storey residential buildings on a six-katha land on the north side of the South Bamnarpara Ramadan Market in Turag area.

It has 24 flats. There is another plot of 10 to 12 kathas in front of that building. He lives with his family on the third floor of the building. The rest of the flats are rented out. The eldest daughter Baby has a cattle farm called Emon Dairy Farm on a 15 katha land in South Kamarpara. Apart from this, a 10-storey building is under construction on a four and a half katha land found in Hatirpul.
