Broadcasting of foreign channels including advertisements is stopped in Bangladesh

Broadcasting of foreign channels with advertisements is closed in Bangladesh. Cable operators have stopped broadcasting these channels in Bangladesh from Friday.

According to the government’s decision, programs with advertisements on foreign channels will not be shown in Bangladesh.

Cable operators say that it is not possible to cut off the advertisements from the foreign channels which broadcast the programs with advertisements. For this reason, they have stopped showing the channels.

SM Anwar Parvez, founding president of the Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB), said many people think that Cable operators have stopped broadcasting foreign channels for some reason. But the thing is, foreign channels that broadcast programs with advertisements as per government instructions cannot be shown in Bangladesh. So they have stopped showing it.

Anwar Parvez said if the government gives any new instructions or steps in the future, they will take action accordingly.

An urgent notice issued to the viewers by the cable operators said that as per the instructions of the government’s information ministry, no foreign channel with advertisements can be aired after September 30, 2021. As per the instructions of the government, the cable operators have stopped broadcasting foreign channels with advertisements. They are sorry for the inconvenience.

On September 2, Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud had said that the foreign channels will not be allowed to air in the country without a clean feed policy after September 30.

The minister also warned of enforcing the law otherwise, saying that cable operators often aired foreign channels with commercials, which was a violation of the law.

The clean feed policy calls for foreign channels to streamline content according to region, i.e. not air commercials meant for their region in other regions.

For example, if Indian TV channels are to be aired in Bangladesh, commercials produced by Indian channels will not be allowed to be aired here.
