Student Opens Fire At US School, Injures 4

Four people were injured when a 18-year-old student opened fire on a classroom at Timberview High School in Arlington, Texas. The incident took place on Wednesday, local time. News AFP.

Arlington Assistant Superintendent of Police Kevin Colby said, student Timothy George Simpkins has been arrested in connection with the incident. Colby said Simpkins fled after the incident. He later surrendered. Charges may be brought against him. Police said a gun was recovered from Simpson.

Three of the people who were injured were taken to the hospital, he said. The fourth had light injuries and declined treatment.

Three of the people were students, and one was an older person, he said, adding that he believed two of the victims had gunshot wounds.

The police were looking for Timothy George Simpkins, an 18-year-old Timberview student who fled the scene in a Dodge Charger vehicle, Kolbye said.

After several hours, the department said the student had been taken into custody without incident and that he was facing several counts of aggravated assault with a gun.

The chief did not have information about what type of gun was used or how it was brought into the building.

He said there were more than two or three shots fired.

Live television images showed a heavy police presence around the school, with armed officers searching the sprawling campus and ambulances and fire trucks on the scene.

A fleet of yellow school buses could be seen preparing to evacuate students from the school.

Timberview High School has an enrollment of around 1,900 students.

The Mansfield Independent School District said that the school was “on lockdown as the situation unfolded” but that “the ‘all clear’ has since been given.”

“The reunification process for Timberview High School and Early College High School families has been solidified,” the district said in a statement.

After a year spent largely learning online, US schools have returned to the classroom, reviving the fear of on-campus shootings, with multiple small-scale incidents reported in recent weeks.

More than 248,000 students have been exposed to gun violence in schools since 13 people were killed in the massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999, according to data compiled by The Washington Post.
