Khaleda Zia is free: Anisul Huq
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq today said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is not in government custody as she has been freed on condition after suspension of her jail sentence.
“She has been freed on two conditions. She is receiving treatment freely because she is free,” he said.
The law minister said this while taking part in discussion on a bill at Jatiya Sangsad (JS) today.
Bangladesh Supreme Court Judges (Remuneration and Privileges) bill, 2021 was passed in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) after discussion today.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq moved the bill in the House which was unanimously passed by voice vote with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhruy in the chair.
While replying BNP lawmaker Mosharraf Hossain’s call for sending Begum Khaleda Zia abroad under section 406 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), declaring her residence as sub-jail, the law minister said, “I cannot understand why there is so much confusion in their information! Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina released Khaleda Zia for six months by suspending her jail term under section 401 of the CrPC for humanitarian reasons. She is now totally free. There are two conditions, which are still there.”
“It is not mandatory that whoever gets released as per section 401 of the CrPC, will be able to go abroad. We have to see if there is any condition or not. For Khaleda Zia, the condition is she cannot go abroad and will take treatment in the country. She can receive treatment anywhere in the country and she is doing that,” he added.
The law minister further said the BNP lawmakers are telling that their chairperson is in custody, which is not. She is free and she is taking treatment according to her will, Anisul added.
