All that it takes Bangladesh to reach Semifinal after the DLS thriller defeat

Bangladesh lost by three runs to Sri Lanka in their fifth Women’s Asia Cup encounter on Monday at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

Defending champions now possess a tough road ahead to reach the semi-finals. Now that India defeated Thailand today in the afternoon, all that takes Bangladesh to reach the semi-finals is to achieve a win tomorrow. Only a win and Bangladesh will be through to the semi-finals of the Asia Cup as the Thailand women’s cricket team ended their group stage endeavour with a low run rate compared to Bangladesh while Bangladesh still living a chance to win tomorrow and make it through.

Previously, despite starting well, the Tigresses collapsed to 37 for seven in seven overs as they were up to chase down 41 in a rain-shortened match.

Despite losing both openers inside three overs and with only 12 runs on board, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty and Rumana Ahmed stitched a 15-run and the home side had the upper hand, needing 15 from 12 deliveries with eight wickets in hand.

However, wickets kept falling as the Tigresses aimed for the big shots. The sixth over saw four wickets fall and the equation was reduced to a challenging 12 off the last over but the home side batters were not able to strike a single boundary. Player-of-the-match Inoka Ranaweera grabbed four wickets in two overs while conceding only seven runs.

As the Tigresses tried massive strokes, wickets fell. Inoka Ranaweera took four wickets in two overs and allowed seven runs. Four wickets fell in the sixth over, reducing the equation to 12 off the final over, but the Bangladesh batters appeared futile to hit a boundary.

Earlier, Sri Lanka were sent in to bat first and the island nation scored 83 for five in 18.1 after a 30-min rain stopped proceedings, which meant DLS method had to be introduced to give the home side a reduced target.
