EC formation: Political parties will be able to give names till February 10

The registered political parties will be able to propose names for the formation of the new Election Commission (EC) till February 10. Besides, those who are interested in personal level can also give their names.

According to the decision taken at the first meeting of the search committee, a notification was issued by the cabinet department on Sunday (February 8).

A statement signed by Shafiul Azim, Joint Secretary, Cabinet Division, said that for the information of all concerned, the names of persons eligible for appointment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners have been submitted to the President. The search committee is inviting the names of interested persons to make recommendations  . 

It further said that the political parties registered with the Election Commission will be able to propose the names of maximum 10 candidates by 5 pm on February 10. At the individual level, interested parties can also suggest their own names. 

Proposed names with full CVs are requested to be sent directly to the Cabinet Division or by mail ( gfp_sec@cabinet.gov.bd ).

Meanwhile, the term of the current Election Commission headed by KM Nurul Huda is coming to an end on February 14. As a result, the newly formed search committee will make recommendations to the President on the appointment of CEC and four election commissioners. This recommendation must be submitted within 15 working days.

The first meeting of the inquiry committee was held at the Judges Lounge of the Supreme Court on Sunday afternoon. After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told reporters that the Cabinet Division was providing secretarial assistance to the inquiry committee.
