Names from registered political parties sought for search committee by tomorrow

All the registered political parties which have not yet proposed their names to the search committee have
been requested to submit their names by 5 pm tomorrow.

The cabinet secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam said the names have already been proposed from 24 registered political parties, Report BSS

Prominent citizen Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, during a meeting with the search committee, suggested that the parties which did not propose names should be requested again and the committee decided to ask for the names again.

A total of 24 registered political parties, including ruling Awami League, have submitted 329 names for EC formation.

Of them, 136 names from political parties, 40 names from professional bodies, 34 names from individuals, 20 names while giving opinions and 99 names from various emails.

These names will be published on the website of the Cabinet Division on Monday afternoon.  The next meeting of the search committee will be held on Tuesday at 4.30 pm.

Earlier, the search committee issued letters to the registered political parties seeking names by 5pm Friday (February 11) for constituting new Election Commission comprising chief election commissioner and other commissioners.

Earlier, President M Abdul Hamid on February 5 formed the six-member search committee to constitute the Election Commission (EC) as per the ‘Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act 2022’ for conducting the next general elections.

The tenure of the current EC will expire on February 14 (Monday).

Meanwhile, the newly formed search committee today held 3rd meeting for three hours with the country’s eminent citizens to take their (citizens) opinions.

The eminent citizens took part in the meeting at the Bangladesh Supreme Court’s conference room here with search committee chief Justice Obaidul Hassan in the chair.
