5 dead, 20 missing as launch capsizes in Shitalakshya

At least five people died and 20 people remain missing after a ferry capsized in the Shitalakshya river in Bangladesh’s Dhaka on Sunday afternoon.

Of the deceased, one was identified as Joynal, 50, while the identity of others is yet to be ascertained, said Shahjahan Sikder, an official of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters.

Sources at the fire service said the launch named ‘MM Ashraf Uddin’ which was heading towards Munshiganj with 50 passengers, capsized in the river as it collided with a goods-laden cargo ship ‘MV Rupsi-9’ around 2 pm near Al-Amin Nagar area under Sadar upazila of the district.

After the collision, half of the passengers of the launch managed to swim ashore.

Officer-in-Charge of Narayanganj Navy Police station Md Moniruzzaman said three units of fire-fighters were conducting a rescue operation.
