Man held for robbery, gang rape in Tangail

The Detective Branch (DB) of district police in a drive today held a man accused for robbery and gang rape a woman in a bus in Modhupur area here today.

The detainee was identified as Raja Mia, 32, an inhabitant in Kalihati Upazila of the district. He was a driver of Jhatika Paribahan on Dhaka-Tangail route.

Raja Mia, along with his accomplices, boarded to a Chattogram bound bus of Eagle Paribahan in guise of passengers last night and took control over the vehicle himself.

They looted money, belongings, mobile phones and other valuables from the passengers of the bus. The gang also gang raped a woman passenger of the bus and left it to a road side ditch.

DB men held him from Natun Bus Stand area in Tangail town where he used to live in a rented house. Three mobile sets were recovered from his possession.

Police Super of Tangail Sarker Mohammad Kaiser said in a press conference this noon at his conference room. He said Raja Mia has given a confessional statement but denied his involvement in raping the woman.

Police super also said Raja Mia was sent to the court seeking a seven-day remand.

On Tuesday night, a gang of robbers disguised as passengers boarded an Eagle Paribahan night coach from Kushtia to Chattogram , took control of the vehicle, beat up the passengers, stole from them and then gang raped a woman on the bus.

Around 3 am, the group drove the bus into a sand dune opposite to the Roktipara Jamme Mosque in Modhupur and fled away.

Hekmat Ali, a passenger on the bus, filed a case with Modhupur police station accusing 10 to 12 unknown robbers over the incident.
