Former finance minister AMA Muhith passes away

Former finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has passed away. He was 88.

He breathed his last at 12:56am on Saturday at United Hospital in the capital.

His first namaz-e-janaza will be held at 10am at Gulshan Azad Mosque and the second one at Parliament premises at 11am on Saturday.

Later, his body will be kept at the Central Shaheed Minar at 12pm for the people to pay their last tribute to the veteran politician. He will be laid to eternal rest in Sylhet.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have mourned Muhith’s death in separate statements.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, Health Minister Zahid Maleque and several other cabinet members also issued statements mourning his death and extending condolences to the members of Muhith’s family.

Main opposition Jatiya Party’s Chairman GM Quader and former president and Bikalpadhara Bangladesh chief AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury also expressed shock and mourned his death.

Muhith was tested positive for coronavirus in July last year. He was taken to hospitals several times as his physical condition deteriorated.

Veteran politician Muhith was born on January 25, 1934, in Sylhet to a political family.

His father, Abu Ahmad Abdul Hafiz, was a judge and one of the founders of the Sylhet All-India Muslim League and took part in the Pakistan Movement.

Muhith took oath as the finance minister of Bangladesh on January 6, 2009. He held the office for 10 consecutive years over two terms and has been a member of the Awami League Advisory Council.

As a finance minister, he announced 12 budgets, 10 of which were presented under the Awami League government.
