Chopper carries ailing AL leader Qamrul Islam to Dhaka

Awami League presidium member advocate Qamrul Islam, who was undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) after failing sick, has been sent to Dhaka.

A helicopter carrying the former food minister left Hazrat Shah Makhdum Airport in Rajshahi at 5:50 pm Wednesday.

Earlier on the day, Qamrul Islam was admitted to the hospital around 10:30 am. After initial treatment, his condition improved. However, he has been shifted to Dhaka due to having some other complications.

“Physical condition of the former food minister improved a bit. But he has some other complications too. His sugar level went beyond control. He has cancer at his stomach which underwent surgery along with chemotherapy. Though his physical condition improved, he has no family members here. He needs intensive family care at this moment. For these reasons, he has been sent to Dhaka,” RMCH director Brig Gen Md. Shamim Yazdani said.

“Qamrul was suffering from dehydration while he was hospitalised. Blood Pressure (BP) measurements were unavailable. So, we prepared the ICU and formed a nine-member medical board headed by prof Khalilur Rahman,” Yazdani furthered.

Qamrul was scheduled to present a meeting ahead of the election of the Rajshahi Lawyers Association. He went to Rajshahi on Tuesday to participate in the meeting.
