US has no headache who wins general election: Ambassador Haas

The United States has no headache about who wins the general election, said the country’s ambassador to Dhaka Peter Haas. He said, the US only wants an election where the commoners can pick their leader.

The US envoy came up with the remark while talking to the reporters after paying a courtesy call on with Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal at the election commission office in Agargaon of the capital on Wednesday.

Haas said, his country is trying to understand the political situation of the country apart from assisting the commission. The EC plays a very significant role in the entire election and election process. Not only the election commission but also the government, political parties, non-governmental organisations, mass media and the people have a very significant role in holding an inclusive and fair election.

Asked whether the US has any suggestion on holding an acceptable election the US envoy said, “No. This is not the US’s business. This responsibility lies on the election commission.”

After the meeting, CEC Awal said, “The US ambassador did not discuss a lot about the election. He briefed ‘something’ about the election. The election here is not as smooth as in the US. Chaos is normal. It happened always. From that point, the EC is ready for holding the polls.”
