Bangladesh start with a win, beat Sri Lanka 1-0

The 2021 SAFF Championship kicked off in the Maldives with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka facing each other in the tournament opener on Friday (October 1) at 5pm Bangladesh time.

The two teams met at the National Football Stadium in Male, the capital of the Maldives. Bangladesh was ahead in possession and attack in the first half. Jamal took 7 shots in the opponent’s net with 62% possession of the ball. The Lankans took 5 on the opposite side.

Before the break, Bangladesh team  did not find the goal bcs of great save of the Sri Lankan goalkeeper. As a result, the first half of the match ended in a goalless draw.

After the break, the disciples of Oscar Brujon started attacking one after another.

Topu Barman scored the only goal of the game from 12 yards after Bangladesh were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute. This was soon after Sri Lanka’s Duckson Puslas picked up a red card and was sent off.

The penalty goal was enough for Bangladesh to claim a 1-0 win and start their 2021 SAFF Championship journey with a win.

Bangladesh will face seven-time India in their next game on Monday at the same venue.
