Recognition of third gender came through hands of Bangabandhu’s daughter: Hasan Mahmud

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said recognition of the third gender has come through the hands of Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He said that many people were in power in this country, but no one gave them the opportunity to write the third gender in their passports or government forms.

Terming Sheikh Hasina as the mother of 3rd gender, Hasan said she gave them the opportunity to recognize the third gender in the country.

The information minister was speaking as the chief guest at the Prime Minister’s gift distribution function on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha among the third gender community at the initiative of Chattogram district administration, held on its office premises this noon.

Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Md Mominur Rahman presided over the function while city Awami League (AL) general secretary and former Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, President of Chattogram Chamber Mahabubul Alam, City unit Freedom Fighter Commander Mozaffar Ahmed, District Unit Muktijuddah Commander Sarwar Kamal, Chattogram Press Club President Ali Abbas and third gender representative Falguni Hijra among others addressed the function.

Speaking in the function, Dr Hasan said that this time the Eid journey is getting more comfortable than in the past due to the construction of Padma Bridge.

“But I saw in online news that BNP leaders are saying people are suffering in the Eid journey. In fact, people are good. The holy Eid-ul-Azha is the Eid festival that teaches people to sacrifice and establish brotherhood among them. I hope they will stop lying in the country ahead of Eid. Stop the politics of confusing the people,” he added.

Dr. Hasan Mahmud said the government of Sheikh Hasina,  believes in the development and advancement of all the people of the country.

“The kind of development of the neglected and marginalized population in the last thirteen and a half years did never happened before in Bangladesh. Even in developed and developing countries, development plans have not been taken keeping the marginalized people in mind,” he added.

He said there was no recognition of people of the third gender before in Bangladesh.

“Recognition of people of the third gender has come through the hands of Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina. In some cases special quotas have been kept for them.

Allocations are being made for them in various ways. No one has ever recognized that there is a gender called the third gender. In many cases, Sheikh Hasina has thought of the people of the third sex whom the family denies. Recognition has come through her hands,” he said.

The Minister of Information and Broadcasting said not only the third gender, but also those who have autistic children kept their kids hidden before thirteen or fourteen years ago.

“Autistic teenagers in our country have participated in international sports and brought medals. No one ever thought of it. This has been made possible due to Saima Wazed Putul, the worthy daughter of  Sheikh Hasina. In other words, Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina has also thought about the children whose parents used to hide them,” he added.

Dr Hasan said over 41 percent of the people lived below the poverty line before 2009.

“It has come down to 20 percent today. Extreme poverty has come down to 10 percent. This has been made possible for the fact that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has paid attention to people of all walks of life,” he said.

AL joint general secretary Hassan Mahmud said that the whole world including the Secretary General of the United Nations, the President of the United States, the Prime Minister of India, the President of the European Union and the World Bank have acknowledged that the country has moved forward today.

“The World Bank also congratulated on Padma Bridge, but the BNP could not congratulate,” he added.

He said,  the excitement has been created among the people today after inauguration of the Padma Bridge.   Mirza Fakhrul’s statement is exactly like the statement made by the lunatics standing on Rhode Island over Padma Bridge.
