Five people killed as bus runs over autorickshaw in Chattogram

Five people were killed after a bus has rammed into an autorickshaw on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Highway in Patiya upazila on Monday.

However, they could not be identified immediately.

The Chattogram city-bound bus hit the autorickshaw from behind on the bypass in an area between Joludighi and Baiar Dighi around 8:15pm, said Patiya Police Station chief Rashedul Islam.

The victims were passengers and the driver of the autorickshaw, and they died at the scene, he said.

Pradip Tripura, an official of the Fire Service and Civil Defence who took part in the rescue operation, said four of the victims were male and the other one was a female.

Road accidents are common in Bangladesh. At least 2,329 people, including 291 women and 381 children, were killed and 4,361 others injured in 2,159 road accidents across the country in the first half of the current year, says a new report by the Road Safety Foundation.

The road accidents took place on highways, national, inter-district and regional roads between January 1 and June 30 across the country.
