Former President Ershad’s third death anniversary today
Today (July 14) marks the third death anniversary of former president and Jatiya Party founder chairman Pallibandhu Hussain Muhammad Ershad. Jatiya Party has undertaken various programs to celebrate the day with due dignity.
On this occasion, Rangpur District and Metropolitan Jatiya Party has undertaken various programs on Thursday. In Rangpur, there are various programs including paying tribute to HM Ershad’s tomb, Milad Mahfil, Quran recitation, providing food aid to the needy and poor and distributing good food.
SM Yasir, general secretary of the party’s Mahanagar Jatiya Party and central vice-chairman of the party, said the party’s top and local leaders and workers would hold various programs to seek forgiveness for Ershad’s soul.
He said leaders and activists have been asked to be present at the third death anniversary program of Jatiya Party founder and former president Hussein Muhammad Ershad. The programs include hoisting national and party flags at the party office at Central Road in Rangpur on Thursday morning, holding black badges, paying homage to the late President HM Ershad at the city’s Darshana Mor Palli Nibas, reciting Fatiha and holding a prayer meeting at 4:30 pm.
Apart from this, Quran recitation will be held at important places in the city throughout the day and Dua Mahfil will be held at different mosques after Asr. Milad and Doa Mahfil have been organized at every municipality, upazila and union level of the district. District Jatiya Party president and former state minister Mosiur Rahman Ranga and many central leaders will participate in the death anniversary ceremony.
It is to be noted that Hussain Muhammad Ershad worked for the development of rural Bengal including infrastructural development and economic prosperity of the country for 9 years from 1982-1990. The former head of state was also the promoter of the Upazila system including declaration of Islam as the state religion, weekly holiday on Friday, waiver of electricity bills of religious institutions.
During his tenure, the freedom fighters were declared as the best children of the nation. His timely decisions including formulation of drug policy, infrastructural development, construction of embankment in Dhaka, construction of Jamuna bridge are still commendable and unfinished.
Ershad founded the Jatiya Party in 1986. From the very beginning, greater Rangpur became the stronghold of the Jatiya Party. And so, even though he was a former army chief, after his death, Ershad was buried in a rural residence in Rangpur in the face of the demands of the devotees.
Hussein Muhammad Ershad was born on 1 February 1930 in Dinhata, Kochbihar district of undivided India. Later he moved to Rangpur with his family. He died at the age of 90 on July 14, 2019 while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.
