Human rights violations by Zia, BNP to be exposed to UNHRC: Hasan Mahmud

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said they would expose the incidents of human rights violations unleashed by BNP and its founder Ziaur Rahman before the world community, including the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

“Those who spread rumours and propaganda over human rights violations both at home and abroad would be unmasked,” he said.

Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary, was addressing as chief guest a discussion and screening of a documentary ‘Gonophasi 77′ produced by Deepto Television at Bangabandhu hall of Chattogram Press Club on Friday.

‘Mayer Kanna’, an organisation of families of army members who were victims of killings and disappearance in 1977 during the tenure of military dictator Ziaur Rahman, arranged the event.

Valiant freedom fighter Nazrul Islam, MP, former Justice of Appellate Division of Supreme Court Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, former President of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Major General (retd) Golam Helal Morshed Khan, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Deepto Television and Director of ‘Gonophasi 77′ documentary Fuad Chowdhury, Chattogram Metropolitan Muktijoddha Sangsad Commander Mozaffar Ahmad, Chief Coordinator of ‘Mayer Kanna’ Md. Kamruzzaman Mia Lelin and other family members who were disappeared in 1977 also spoke on the occasion.

Managing Director of Deepto Television Kazi Jahidul Hasan presided over the function.

The minister said Ziaur Rahman was a cool-headed murderer who used to sign order of execution while having breakfast.

Today demands have been raised to form a strong commission to expose the truth of the brutal killings of officers and soldiers of the Army and Air Force taken place in 1977 during the tenure of Ziaur Rahman before the nation, he said.

“I am expressing solidarity with the demands,” he said.

Hasan said those who spoke here today do not know where the graves of their father and husband were.

“They don’t know when their husband or father was hanged and how they were killed. BNP leaders including Khaleda Zia and its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir should give the answer,” he added.

He thanked Deepto TV for arranging gathering of the family members of victims to reveal the story of Ziaur Rahman’s ruthlessness and brutality.

The Awami League Joint Secretary said BNP leaders including Mirza Fakhrul spoke about the violations of human rights in front of Nayapaltan office and Jatiya Press Club.

“We want reply from BNP leaders about the violation of human rights and brutality of Ziaur Rahman in 1977 and gruesome grenade attacks on Awami League rally on August 21 in 2004 and killing of innocent people by hurling petrol bombs during 2013-14-15 period by Begum Khaleda Zia,” he said.
