Babul Akter, 6 others charge-sheeted in Mitu murder case

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has pressed a charge sheet against former superintendent of police (SP) Babul Akter in a case filed over the murder of his wife Mitu.

On June 5, 2016, Babul Akter’s wife Mahmuda was shot and hacked to death by miscrients in GEC intersection area of Chattogram city. She had gone to GEC intersection to drop their elder son to the school bus.

Babul was in Dhaka at the time of the incident. Later, he went to Chattogram and filed a murder case against unknown persons. With the final report of Babul’s case, he was made the main accused in the charge sheet of a case filed by his father-in-law.

The case was transferred to the Police Bureau Investigation (PBI) in 2019 after Mitu’s father, himself a retired police officer, filed a complaint against the CMP’s mishandling of the case.

On May 11, the PBI interrogated Babul in custody and found his involvement in the case. It submitted a 575-page final report of the case to the court the next day.

On the same day, Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain filed a murder case with Panchlaish Police Station accusing eight people, including Babul.

Showing him arrested in that case, the PBI grilled Babul in remand. He has remained in custody since May 17 last year.
