Closed jute mills to reopen in phases: Minister

More than two years after shutting down 25 state-owned jute mills under Bangladesh Jute Mill Corporation (BJMC), the government is now thinking of reopening them in phases.

Jute and Textiles Minister  disclosed the plan while talking to the journalists after visiting Amin Jute Mill in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.

“The rental-based mills of BJMC have started production and export of jute products under private management. These mills have created new employment opportunities for many people in the country,” he said.

Three jute mills – Bangladesh Jute Mills Ltd, in Narsingdi, KFD Jute Mills Ltd in Chattogram and National Jute Mill at Sirajganj have already been given rental-basis leasing, he said.

The leasing activities of other three jute mills, according to the minister, are also undergoing.

Mentionable, production activities at the 25 state-owned jute mills remained stopped since July 1, 2020. The move was aimed to to find a permanent solution to the existing situation of jute mills and to revive the jute sector.
