Panchagarh boat tragedy: death toll rises to 35

Eleven more bodies were recovered today from Karatoya river near Auliya Ghat in Boda upazila of the district after a boat capsized on Sunday, raising the death toll to 35.

The fire brigade divers salvaged the bodies as the rescue operation is going on in full swing to find remaining missing people after a boat sank in the river, Boda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sujoy Kumar Roy said.

The identity of the bodies is yet to known, he said.

Earlier, 24 bodies were recovered after a boat carrying passengers beyond its capacity overturned in the river Karatoya in northern Panchagarh district yesterday.

The boat sank in Auliya Ghat area under Boda Police Station and dozens remained missing in the boat capsize, Roy said.

The district administration has given Taka 20,000 each deceased family and Taka 10,000 each injured person, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Zahurul Islam said.

Zahurul Islam also said they formed a five-member committee to investigate into the incident and asked to submit its report by three working days.

The bodies of those identified have been handed over to their relatives, DC added.
