‘US does not favor any particular political party’: Haas

United States (US) Ambassador in Dhaka Peter Haas today said that Washington does not favor any particular political party.

“I want to make one thing very clear: the United States does not favor any particular political party” he said.

The envoy made the remarks at the event ‘meet the ambassador’ organized by Center for Governance Studies and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Bangladesh Foundation at a city hotel.

Haas said ensuring free and fair elections is everyone’s responsibility as election commission to the government, from the media to law enforcement agencies, from civil society to political parties, everyone has an important
role to play.

“What we want is a free and fair election conducted in accordance with international standards where the people of Bangladesh can freely choose their own government,” he added.

Pointing on the recent political violence, Haas said free and fair elections simply cannot take place in an environment with political violence.

Talking about the Rohingya influx, he said during this time, Bangladesh has shown incredible generosity and compassion in welcoming them into the country and giving them shelter.

“We are aware of the financial burden this has imposed on Bangladesh. The US announced an additional $170 million to support Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi host communities.

Terming ‘addressing climate change’ a core priority for the Biden administration, Haas said his country applauds Bangladesh’s leadership in addressing climate change and Bangladesh is a proud partner in addressing
this problem.

While talking about intensifying trade and business between two countries the envoy said, “I was pleased to see Sheikh Hasina’s recent invitation to US companies to invest in Bangladesh.”

As a testament to the importance, the US Embassy will welcome our first ever full-time attach‚ from the US Department of Commerce this coming year, he added.

The US ambassador also ensured that the US is ready to work with Bangladesh to transition from an emergency response to a more sustainable one.
