Top Jamaat leader’s son held over ‘militancy’

A special unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested two including Sylhet region’s chief coordinator of a banned militant organization in over their alleged connection with militancy involvement.

The arrestees are Dr Rafat, son of central Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer, and Arif, who were arrested on Wednesday, confirmed the DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit on Thursday.

“We got informed that Dr Rafat is the chief coordinator of a new militant organization in Sylhet, also son of a Jamaat Amir,” CTTC chief Md Asaduzzaman told the media.

The CTTC bomb disposal unit, according to him, conducted an operation in the capital’s Saydabad area on November 1 and arrested three members who had went missing in the name of ‘Hizrat’.

A case was filed with Jatrabari police station under anti-terrorism act.

During the interrogation, the arrestees said that they are all invited by Dr Rafat.

He said that the arrested Dr Rafat has been conducting ‘Daawat’ (Invitation) programmes to inculcate youths in the ‘Jihadi’ spirit.

Arrested Rafat said that in June 2021, 11 people got ‘Hizrat’ to Bandarban from Sylhet under the leadership of him and another associate Tahiyat. As they could not contact other leaders of the militant organization, they returned to Sylhet and continued the militant activities, he said.

In primary information, Rafat said he and his associates trained several youths in militancy and bomb-making in remote hilly areas.

During the briefing, the CTTC chief said that Rafat is responsible for so many youths joining militant organizations.
