Chhatra Dal leader killed in B’baria ‘police firing’

A leader of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was shot dead by police at Bancharampur upazila in Brahmanbaria, said Liakat Ali Faird, convener of the upazila unit BNP.

The victim is Rafiqul Islam Nayan, 28, who was shot during a procession and was subsequenty declared dead at 7:30pm at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday.

But Nure Alam, officer-in-charge of Bancharampur Police Station, claimed that police were forced to fire shots in the air to bring the situation under control when BNP men attacked them.

OC Nure Alam said BNP leaders and activists tried to snatch weapons from two constables on patrol, triggering a clash.

“At that time, the constable fired one shot in the air. Seven policemen, including him, were injured in the clash,” the OC claimed.

He added that two BNP activists were arrested in this connection.
