Journalist Abu Sayem Akhand’s mother slaughtered in Tangail

Police recovered the throat-slit body of a freedom fighter’s wife and a journalist‘s mother from her house in Bhuapur upazila in Tangail district early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Sultana Suraiya, 65, mother of Abu Sayem Akhand, news editor of English daily ‘The Business Standard’ and wife of late freedom fighter Rahim Akhand.

According to locals, Suraiya used to live alone in the house. On Thursday evening, family members and neighbours found her phone switched off. Later, they went to the house and found her lying on the floor and informed police.

Abu Sayem Akhand said, “My mother used to live alone in the house. There was no enmity with anyone. Drug addicts might have come to steal and do this. I demand a thorough investigation into the incident and immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the perpetrators.”

Bhuapur Police Station officer-in-charge (OC)  Ahsan Ullah said being informed, police recovered the body from the spot and sent to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy on Friday morning. He added, “Preliminary investigation suggested that it was a murder and legal actions would be taken in this regard.”
