Jubo League leader loses candidature threatening DC, SP

The candidacy of independent candidate for Laxmipur-1 constituency Mohammad Habibur Rahman Paban, also Jubo League presidium member has been cancelled by the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday for threatening deputy commissioner and superintendent of police.

Deputy Secretary of the EC’s legal section Abdus Salam delivered the information in a letter signed by him on Tuesday.

The commission took the decision regarding Paban’s candidacy after holding a hearing yesterday.

According to the letter, Mohammad Habibur Rahman Paban made a phone call to the Deputy Commissioner of Laxmipur and also Returning Officer Suraiya Jahan through WhatsApp at 7:30pm on December 30 and made inaudible, objectionable and indecent statements.

The Deputy Commissioner of Lakshimpur sent a letter to the Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat on December 30, 2023, requesting to take legal action against the candidate alleging that he had threatened to transfer the returning officer and superintendent of police within three days.

The election enquiry committee sent a report to the Election Commission on December 31, 2023 recommending legal action against the candidate.
