This victory is not of mine, it’s people’s victory: Sheikh Hasina
Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has said that the landslide victory of her party in the 12th parliamentary election is not of her victory, rather it is the victory of people.
“This victory is not of mine, rather it’s people’s victory,” she said while exchanging views with local and foreign observers and journalists at her official Ganabhaban residence in Dhaka on Monday (January 8) afternoon.
Terming the Sunday’s election as an epoch-making event, she said it was a breakthrough event for the democracy in Bangladesh. The country’s communication systems would be developed further. After the ‘Digital Bangladesh’, now attention would be given to build ‘Smart Bangladesh.’ Not a single person in Bangladesh will remain impoverished.
Expressing the hope to create employment opportunities for all, Sheikh Hasina said, “We will generate employment opportunity for every single person. People’s fundamental rights will be ensured further.”
Sheikh Hasina said action plan is worked out in three phases after formation of the government every time. “We have been receiving support and cooperation from the friendly countries. The objective of our foreign policy is friendship to all and malice to none.”
She added that her new government would for the next five years to improve the living standard of the country’s people. “Our accountability to the country’s people is our first priority. We always think about how to ensure better life of them.”
Replying to a question about the punishment of Nobel laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, she said, “I have no responsibility about the punishment of Dr Yunus, rather it’s a matter under the jurisdiction of labour court.”
Bangabandhu’s younger daughter and Sheikh Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana, Bangabandhu’s grandchildren Saima Wazed and Radwan Mujib Siddiq were, among others, were present.
In the 12th general elections, Bangladesh Awami League clinched a landslide victory with over two-thirds majority, giving the AL-led 14-party alliance another chance to form the government for the fourth consecutive terms.
The massive victory has paved the way for Awami League President Sheikh Hasina to lead the government as Prime Minister for the fifth time and fourth time in a row.
The Election Commission so far announced unofficially the results of 298 parliamentary seats out of the 300 where election was held in a free and fair manner.
According to the unofficial results, the AL bagged 222 seats alone while Jatiya Party secured 11 seats. Independent candidates secured second highest 62 seats and Jasad, Bangladesh Kalyan Party and Bangladesh Workers’ Party got one seat each.
Voting in Naogaon-2 constituency was postponed due to death of an independent candidate earlier. EC will announce the result of Mymensingh-3 constituency later as the polling in one centre was postponed.
