Bailey Road fire: Two owners, manager of restaurants arrested

Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident of fire at Bailey Road in the capital that left 46 people dead.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested two owners of Cha-Chumuk Restaurant and the manager of Kacchi Bhai Restaurant — housed on the ground floor of the seven-storeyed building which was engulfed by fire on Thursday night.The arrested are now being questioned, police said.

Addressing a media briefing at the DMP Media Centre in the capital on Friday (March 1) night, DMP’s additional police commissioner (Crime and Ops) Dr K. Mohiduddin said police arrested Cha-Chumuk Restaurant’s owners Anwarul Huq and Shafiqur Rahman Rimon, and Kacchi Bhai’s manager Joynuddin Jishan.

Citing about the observation of police, he said there were two restaurants on the ground floor. The large portion of the restaurant was on the rear side while the smaller portion for drinking tea and coffee was on the front side. The fire had originated from the smaller portion of the restaurant. The video footage of it is also available to all the relevant people. Being the plaintiff, police will file a case on charge of deaths due to negligence from fire incident. If anyone from the victims’ families want to file case, they will be able to do it. Three people have already been arrested and questioned in this regard.

Asked whether the building owner had any negligence behind the fire, Dr K Mohiduddin said legal steps would be taken against all who will be found responsible for the fire incident.

Mentioning that 46 people have so far died in the incident of fire, he said 20 men, 18 women and 8 children were killed in the fire. Of the deceased, 40 victims have been identified. Among them, the bodies of 38 victims have been handed over to their respective families. Two bodies have been kept at the freezers of morgues, while attempts are going on to know the identities of rest six persons through the DNA tests.

The police official said the DMP and CID have collected evidence from the spot of the fire. Senior police officials including the Inspector General of Police and DMP Commissioner went to the spot after the fire broke out.
