ICC equals Women’s T20 World Cup prize money to men

In a historic decision, International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the winners of Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will receive the same prize money as the men’s winners, totaling USD 2.34 million.

This landmark move was revealed on September 17 and follows a resolution made during the ICC’s annual conference in July.

The tournament, set to take place in the United Arab Emirates, sees a remarkable 134% increase in prize money compared to the USD 1 million awarded to Australia for their victory in 2023. Runners-up will also benefit, receiving USD 1.17 million, a significant rise from the USD 500,000 that South Africa earned for reaching the final on home soil.

Additionally, each of the two losing semi-finalists will now take home USD 675,000, up from USD 210,000 in the previous edition. The total prize pool for the tournament will be USD 7,958,080, marking a 225% increase from the last total of USD 2.45 million. This makes the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup the first event in ICC history to achieve prize money equity, ahead of the initial target of 2030.

“This initiative aligns with the ICC’s strategy to enhance the women’s game and promote its growth by 2032,” the organization stated. “Teams will now earn equal prize money for equivalent placements in similar events, as well as for winning matches.” The increased prize fund for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is due to the participation of 10 additional teams and an expanded number of matches.

During the group stages, winning teams will receive USD 31,154 per game, while the six teams eliminated before the semi-finals will share a pool of USD 1.35 million, a change from last year’s USD 180,000 pool that was divided equally. Teams finishing third and fourth in their groups will each get USD 270,000, while those in fifth place will earn USD 135,000.

In addition, the ICC has made a slight adjustment to the schedule for the October 5 double-header in Sharjah, with Australia now facing Sri Lanka in the afternoon, and Bangladesh taking on England in the evening.
