Ronaldo rescued Man United against Villarreal

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his record-breaking 178th Champions League appearance with a 95th-minute winner as Manchester United snatched a 2-1 victory over Villarreal at Old Trafford Wednesday.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner had barely threatened until he fired past Geronimo Rulli at the back post to ease the mounting pressure on United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with virtually the last kick of the game.

The Portuguese star then ripped off his shirt as he ran to the fans in celebration, earning himself a yellow card.

It was Ronaldo’s fifth goal in five games since joining from Juventus for a second spell at Old Trafford, and definitely his most important.

After three defeats in their last four games, United could ill-afford another slip-up.

Legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson was present on the field today to watch United play. Not only that, but Usain Bolt, a famous runner, also came on the field. Ronaldo did not disappoint them.

Not only that, Ronaldo has taken the record of playing the most matches in the Champions League alone by removing his former teammate Iker Casillas. He has played 900 matches in his club career. Ronaldo does not paint all such occasions with goals, what can be thought of!

Villarreal looked like handing United a second straight loss in Group F — after the Premier League team’s shocking 2-1 defeat at Swiss outsider Young Boys two weeks ago — by going in front in the 53rd through Paco Alcacer.

United had been outplayed up to that point, but equalised within seven minutes through Alex Telles, who was picked out by a pinpoint pass from Bruno Fernandes at a free kick.

The Brazilian left-back took a step back at the edge of the area and struck a first-time volley that swerved inside the far post.

The result broke a run of four straight nil-all draws between the teams in Champions League play, dating back to group matches in 2005 and 2008.

The teams also met in the Europa League final in May, with Villarreal winning a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw.
