No more ‘Gate Lock’ or ‘Seating Service’s on Dhaka buses

Passenger buses will not be allowed to offer “Seating Service” or “Gate Lock” service on Dhaka streets .

Bus owners have decided to abolish seating and gate-lock services from the local buses operating in Dhaka city within the next three days — to stop overcharging passengers.

Enayet Ullah, secretary general of Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association made the disclosure at a press conference held at the organisation’s office in the capital on Wednesday.

Passengers suffer a lot as there are no regulations in the seating service, he said, adding so there will be no seating or gate-lock service.

There will be inspection teams to ensure the implementation of the decision, said Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association Secretary General Khandaker Enayet Ullah during a press conference today.

Eleven such teams will be formed this afternoon, consisting bus owners and transport workers as members, to ensure that no extra fare is charged. The teams will monitor the situation with the help of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police, he added.

Tags will be put on each CNG-run and diesel-run bus within these three days, he also said adding that CNG-run buses are not supposed to charge the new increased fare.

Currently under 120 companies around 6,000 buses and minibuses run on Dhaka city roads and outskirts of Dhaka, he mentioned.

Among these only 196 buses [3.26 per cent] ran on compressed natural gas and the rest ran on diesel, he claimed and added that almost no buses on long routes ran by CNG.

Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association and Bangladesh Road Transport Worker’s Federation jointly organised the press conference over the hike of bus fare at the association’s Dhaka office.

A letter was sent to concerned authorities in and outside Dhaka so that extra fare cannot be charged from commuters, Khandaker Enayet Ullah added.

The press conference was attended, among others, by the workers’ federation general secretary Osman Ali.
