Tributes pour in for eminent archaeologist Dr Enamul Haque

Ministers and state ministers shared condolences at the death of Independence and Ekushey awards winning archaeologist and founding director general of National Museum Professor Dr Enamul Haque.

In separate condolence messages, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman and State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid expressed deep shock and sorrow at his death.

Recalling life and works of Haque, the foreign minister said he had a huge contribution to the field of archeological research and conservation in Bangladesh.

His role in modernization of the National Museum while serving as the founding DG will always be remembered, Momen said.

He said Haque’s death is an irreparable loss to the nation.

Dipu Moni said Haque penned songs and dance-dramas using various elements of folk culture.

He portrayed life and works of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in a unique style through “Poter Gan”, a cultural tradition of Bengal Patachitra (a general term for traditional, cloth-based scroll painting).

The archeologist introduced the nation with archaeological evidences in different parts of the country through a programme “Dekha Hoy Nai Chokkhu Meliya” in his description broadcast in state-run Bangladesh Television (BTV) for long, she said.

KM Khalid said during the great War of Liberation, Haque visited London and New York and played an important role in raising world opinion in favour of independence of Bangladesh.

With gratitude, the nation will always remember Haque’s efforts in establishing Bangladesh National Museum as well as introducing Rabindra and Nazrul Jayanti (jubilee) celebrations at the national level, he added.

The ministers and state minister also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Professor Enamul Haque, a history and art expert, had a deep passion and respect to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Dr Enamul was the founding editor of the literary magazine, Uttaran, during his study at University of Dhaka.

The Government of India also awarded him the “Padma Shri”, the fourth-highest civilian award of the country, in 2020 for his special contribution to archeology.
