Today is Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday

Today marks the 152nd birthday of Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi), a symbol of non-violence and peace-loving leader. He was born on 2 October 1869 in the city of Parbandar in the Indian state of Gujarat. A lawyer whose life changed through his experiences in South Africa, Gandhi played the most significant role in India’s independence movement, holding demonstrations through non-violent means.

The United Nations has declared Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday as a day of non-violence. The day will be celebrated in Bangladesh through various programs. Mahatma Gandhi is the father of the Indian nation.

Mahatma Gandhi went to London in 1891 to study law and obtained a bar-at-law degree. He later moved to Durban, South Africa, to work as a legal consultant for a law firm. While there, he started a movement for the political and social rights of the expatriate Indians.

At this time he led various movements against the English. Gandhi returned to India in 1914 and joined the anti-British movement. In 1921 he moved to the leadership of the Indian National Congress. During this time he started a non-cooperation movement against the British and was imprisoned several times. On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead by a man named Nathuram Godse.

On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday and World Day of Non-Violence, the Liberation War Museum has organized an online event on their Facebook page at 8 pm tonight. Notre Dame College Principal Father Hemant Pius Rosario and Liberation War Museum Trustee Dr. Sarwar Ali will take part in the discussion. Later, songs of peace and harmony will be sung by Baul and band artists.
