Ongoing transport strike across the country will continue till Sunday

In protest against the latest hike in fuel prices, the ongoing transport strike across the country will continue till Sunday (November 7).

Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association Secretary General Khandaker Enayet Ullah confirmed the information on Friday (November 5) night.

Enayet Ullah said, “No decision has come till now from the government regarding the withdrawal of the strike. A meeting in this regard will be held on Sunday and till then, the strike will continue.”

Public and goods transport owners called an indefinite nationwide strike from Friday in protest against the latest hike in fuel prices—a hike of Tk 15 per liter.

Meanwhile, Commuters in Dhaka were seen scrambling for public transport on Friday morning, the first day of the nationwide transport strike prompted by the sudden hike in fuel prices.

A large crowd was seen waiting for transportation at the capital’s Shyamoli Square. At last, when a BRTC bus stopped there after a long time, passengers scrambled into the overcrowded bus.

No long-route buses left the terminals in Shyamoli or Gabtoli, forcing many passengers to return home.

Auto-rickshaws and rickshaws have also increased their fares as examinees — hoping to take the admission test for the seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University — struggled to find other means of transportation.

Truck and bus owners’ associations across the country have declared that the strike will continue until the new prices are declared null and void or the bus fares are increased.

Bangladesh Truck-Covered Van Owners’ Association President Md Tofazzal Hossain Majumder and Bangladesh Road Transport Owners’ Association Executive President Rustam Ali Khan on Thursday declared the nationwide indefinite strike protesting the hike in diesel oil price which came into effect the same day.

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder told an online news portal that a meeting would be held on Sunday to discuss transport fares.
