Cyclone Sitrang death toll hits 34

The country’s coastal districts not only saw the trail of destruction caused by the cyclonic storm, Sitrang, but logged dozens of deaths between Monday afternoon and Tuesday evening.

The deaths were resulted from the sinking of boats and trawlers, the falling trees and the collapse of walls across the country.

The cyclonic storm started crossing Bangladesh’s coastline on Monday evening.

Chattogram’s Mirsarai upazila saw the highest number of eight deaths. The victims – all workers – died as a dredger sank off in the bay.

Bhola was second-worst hit district where four people died. Cumilla and Tangail jointly came third. In Cumilla’s Nangalkot upazila, a man, his wife and their little daughter died.

In Tangail, two policemen and an accused died in road crash driven by then storm.

The rest deaths were reported in Barguna, Patuakhali, Dhaka, Noakhali, Shariatpur, Narail, Gazipur, Cox’s Bazar, Gopalganj and Munshiganj.
