Zelensky of Ukraine will address the British Parliament

LONDON: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will address British lawmakers via video link in the House of Commons on Tuesday, the first time the president of another country has addressed the main Westminster Chamber.
Zelensky, who has spoken to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on several occasions since Russia invaded his country, gave a number of emotional speeches last week to Western leaders on supplies and military assistance.

He will address the chamber at 1700 GMT when formal parliamentary proceedings will be adjourned. Lawmakers will be able to watch speeches onto overnight installed screens, with 500 headsets providing simultaneous English translations.
Former world leaders, including US President Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, and Angela Merkel of Germany, have previously spoken at other parts of the parliamentary estate on the banks of the River Thames, including the ornate Royal Gallery or the huge Westminster Hall.
“Every Member of Parliament wants to hear directly from the President, who will speak to us directly from Ukraine, so this is an important opportunity for the House,” Speaker Lindsay Howell said in a statement.
“Thanks again to our incredible staff for working at speed to make this historic address possible.”
Britain’s defense minister, Ben Wallace, told Sky News he hoped the address would be “incredibly powerful”.

“President Zelensky has a Ukrainian consciousness, which is young, which is liberal thinking, which is external, which is European, and which is not what Russia or President Vladimir Putin understands,” he said.
Johnson was given a very rare standing ovation when the Ukrainian ambassador to London appeared in the chamber last week to answer questions from lawmakers.
