Chittagong port operational even after 53 of its staffers died of COVID-19

Works in Chittagong port were not suspended for a single moment even after the port lost 53 of its official-workers to corona. This port has played a vital role in keeping the country’s economy afloat.

In 2021, the port handled a record number of 3.21 million TEU containers. The chairman of the port, Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said this.

The information was known from the 42nd meeting of the Standing Committee of the Ministry of Shipping held at the Parliament House on Wednesday (February 9). Earlier, Major (retd) Rafiqul Islam Bir Uttam, chairman of the committee, said that although many developments have taken place in Chittagong port, it has not been coordinated as part of a larger plan. As a result, Chittagong port is not as attractive as foreign ports. He emphasized on the need to formulate a plan to upgrade the port of Chittagong to a modern and scenic port of international standard.

In response to this, he thanked the officers, employees and workers of all levels of the port for continuing their work even amid the pandemic. M Shahjahan further said that the Chittagong port was 134-year-old. In view of the demand and in terms of necessity, different establishments of Chittagong port have developed in different places over time. As a result, it was not possible to build the port in a spectacular manner as planned.

As it is a Brownfield port, it is difficult to arrange it as planned. Even then, plans will be made to upgrade the port as much as possible through ‘remodeling’ to make it a modern and scenic port of international standard. Besides, modern and attractive port facilities of international standard will be constructed in the Green Field Project Bay Terminal area of Chittagong Port, he said.
