Demand for cancellation of the proposed Media Act-2022

Journalist leaders have demanded the cancellation of the proposed Media Act-2022, which is awaiting presentation in the National Assembly. They said they would not abide by the law in any way. Because the law is the result of a deep conspiracy against journalists. They said this at a human chain and rally organized by ‘Justice for Journalists’ at the premises of National Press Club on Sunday.

President of BFUJ-Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (FUJUJ) Dip Azad, addressed the human chain under the chairmanship of Kamrul Islam, President of Justice for Journalists, and Secretary General Shahin Babu. General Secretary Sajjad Alam Tapu, Treasurer of National Press Club Shahed Chowdhury, Former Joint Secretary of Dhaka Journalists Union Akhtar Hossain, Member Secretary of Bangabandhu Journalists Council Abu Saeed, General Secretary of Television Cameraperson Journalists Association Shahidul Haque Jibon, Journalist Poet Abdul Mannan, Journalist Leader Mehedi Hasan. Varun Bhowmik Nayan, Khairul Azam, Sakhawat Hossain, Shahjahan Saju, Hemayet Hossain, Jahangir Khan Babu, leader of Dhaka journalist union Shamima Dola and others.

BFUJ secretary general Deep Azad told that the proposed media workers law was against the rights of journalists. The sections that have been added to the proposed law are not journalist friendly. Therefore, before the law is presented in the National Assembly, a comprehensive reform is required. He demanded for immediate release of the draft law.

DUJ President Quddus Afrad said there was no court of law under the proposed Media Workers Act 2022 and it was not clear under which law journalists would be tried. In the name of new law, the journalist community is being turned into a slave. He demanded further review of the law.

General Secretary Sajjad Alam Tapu said that the proposed law has abolished the existing journalists’ union and deprived the journalists of their existing facilities on a large scale.
