Hasan urges affluent people to build cinema halls to boost film industry

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud called upon the affluent people and businessmen to invest in film by building modern cinema halls specially Cineplex to boost the country’s film industry and bring back golden era of Bengali film.

“We have overcome the darkness in film arena. The future days for our film industry will be good. Many closed cinema halls have already been reopened and new halls are also being constructed in different parts of the country,” he said.

Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary, was addressing a reception ceremony of noted industrialist and film producer Anjan Chowdhury and newly appointed vice-chancellor of the Asian University for Women Dr Rubana Huq.

Anjan was accorded reception for producing the film ‘Manpura’ which won National Film Awards in several categories and becoming ATCO president while Dr Rubana Huq for becoming AUW VC as the first Bangladeshi.

Prime Minister’s Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman Fazlur Rahman, Information Secretary Md Mokbul Hossain, ATCO Director Liaqat Ali Khan Mukul, Ajker Patrika editor Prof Golam Rahman and Ekattur TV editor-in-chief Mozammel Babu joined it, among others.

Daily Observer Editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury moderated the reception hosted by Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO).

Dr Hasan said since the formation of Taka 1,000cr refinance scheme to revive film industry, many persons are getting encouraged to reopen, renovate and construct new cinema halls.

Under the scheme, long term loan is being given at 5 percent interest rest in metropolitan and divisional cities and 4.5 percent rest outside of divisional cities for constructing cinema halls and Cineplex.

He urged the owners of different privet television channels to construct cinema halls for boosting film industry.

“If 100 more Cineplex and modern halls are built, our film will be enriched a lot. Our film directors are very meritorious, our many cinemas won international awards and are being screened in different festivals and getting accolades,” he said.

He congratulated Dr Rubana Huq for becoming vice-chancellor of the Asian University for Women (AUW) for the first Bangladeshi and Anjan Chowdhury for producing films.

Dr. Huq who earned wide prominence as the first female president of the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers’ and Exporters’ Association (BGMEA), is a poet who obtained her PhD in Literature from India’s Jadavpur University.
