Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resume divisional rallies, starts with Rangpur
Sheikh Hasina previously took part in divisional rallies in Jessore, Rajshahi and Chittagong, as the election draws nearer
Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina will resume Awami League’s divisional rallies in the lead-up to the upcoming national election with a gathering in Rangpur on July 30, she will join as chief guest.
The ruling party chief informed Rangpur Awami League leaders of the date when they called on her on Thursday at her official residence Ganabhaban.
HN Ashequr Rahman, the lawmaker representing Rangpur-5 and treasurer of the Awami League, and his son, media personality Rasheq Rahman, were also present on the occasion.
Requesting anonymity, leaders present at the meeting said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, “who is also a daughter-in-law of Rangpur,” was going there to attend the Awami League’s divisional rally arranged by the party’s district and city units, where she would issue some directives to party members in her speech as chief guest.
According to sources at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Sheikh Hasina is expected to fly out to Italy next week. After returning home, she will kick-start a series of election campaigns with the Rangpur divisional rally.
Meeting attendees also told Dhaka Tribune that Ashequr Rahman, who was in his fifth term as a lawmaker, said he would not contest the upcoming national election and instead would work to get his son elected from the constituency if he got the party nomination.
Sheikh Hasina gave an affirmative nod and told him to work for the next election.
Previously, the Awami League chief attended divisional rallies in Jessore, Rajshahi and Chittagong, with the election drawing nearer.
Party insiders said before the election, she would attend rallies in every division as well as in some of the districts.
