Police have questioned another journalist Rafiqul Islam Ranju in connection with the recovery of the body of journalist Sohana Parveen Tuli from her home in Hazaribagh. Ranju was interrogated by senior police officers of the Dhanmondi zone on Thursday (July 14) afternoon.

The police officers who involved in the investigation came to know that Tuli had a ‘love affair’ with Ranju. He went to Rayerbazar Mitali Road house in the day before the body was recovered. The police identified Rafiqul Islam Ranju based on the number of a motorcycle given by the caretaker of that house.

Police recovered the hanging body of Sohana Parveen Tuli from her house on Mitali Road in Rayerbazar on Wednesday afternoon. Unable to find Tuli on the phone, her close friend Nandita went home and knocked on the door. But without getting any response from inside, she broke down the door with the help of the security guard and saw Tuli hanging from the ceiling fan with a scarf around her neck. She later informed the Hazaribagh police station and the police rushed to the spot. Tuli’s body was sent to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue after the crime scene unit collected evidence from the spot. After an autopsy on Thursday morning, her body was taken to her village home in Jessore.

After the recovery of Tuli’s body, the police officers who present after analyzing the initial evidence said that the initial investigation seems to be suicide. The door of the room was locked from inside. There was also no way for a person to exit through any other part of the house. Besides, no injury marks were found on Tuli’s body. However, police officials said that the actual cause of death will be known when the autopsy report is received.

Based on the information provided by the security personnel, the Hazaribagh police tried to trace Tuli’s friend. According to the number plate of a motorcycle, the owner of the olive colored motorcycle is a journalist named Rafiqul Islam Ranju. He is working as a joint news editor in a daily newspaper. Later, he was called to the office of Zonal AC Abdullah Al Masum on the third floor of Dhanmondi police station through the administration department of the newspaper. The police officers interrogated him for about an hour.

Sources said that during the police interrogation, Rafiqul Islam admitted that he had a long-term relationship with  Tuli. The relationship began when they were working together in a daily newspaper. After a break of a few years in the middle, the relationship between them has been re-established for the last two years.

Rafiqul Islam Ranju said during interrogation that he went to Tuli’s house a day before the incident. He had a normal relationship with her. He demanded that there should be no defilement or quarrel. He had no idea that Tuli could commit suicide.

Police have instructed Ranju not to leave Dhaka.

According to a source close to the investigation, there is some discrepancy in the information given by Rafiqul Islam Ranju. After Ranju left the house, a call and a text message went from Tuli’s mobile to his mobile. But Ranju did not respond to Tuli’s call and text message. On the contrary, Ranju has also deleted the text message sent by Tuli from his mobile. Attempts are being made to find out what kind of conversation was taking place on Ranju’s mobile with that text message. An attempt is being made to find out why Tuli decided to commit suicide.

It may be mentioned that Sohana Tuli was a student of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University in the academic year 2002-03. She worked in daily Amader somoy, , daily kaler kontho. She last worked for the Bengali Tribune till May 2021. After that she worked in a private company for a few days. She recently opened an online shop and made her debut as a woman entrepreneur.
