Shakib becomes highest wicket-taker in T20 Internationals

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan on Sunday became the highest wicket-taker in T20 International cricket when he pipped Lasith Malinga’s tally of 107 wickets during their T20 World Cup game against Scotland at  Al Amerat stadium, Oman .

Shakib, the greatest ever cricketer from his country, finished with figures of 2/17 in four overs and in the process surpassed the Sri Lankan great’s tally of T20 International wickets.

He however could have claimed the record in the home series against New Zealand but fell two wickets short after snapping up four wickets. The ace allrounder however didn’t play the last match of the five-match series against Kiwis, that Bangladesh won by 3-2. He in fact remained wicket-less in the third and fourth match of that series.

Shakib now has 108 scalps from 89 T20 International games and is also the only cricketer to have a double of 100 wickets and 1000 plus runs in this format.

On the day, he first removed Richie Berrington to equal Malinga and surpassed him with the wicket of Michael Leask.

Third in the list is New Zealand’s Tim Southee, who has 99 wickets to his name.

The two wickets also made him the only player in this planet to score 12,000 runs and claim 600 wickets simultaneously in international cricket.

But another big record also beckons Shakib. After grabbing two wickets in the first match, he now needs eight wickets more to surpass Shahid Afridi’s 39 wickets and becomes the highest wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history.
