Memorandum to ACC

Protection for Legal Human Rights Foundation has organized a human chain to demand speedy trial of Azim-Qasim Syndicate to save North South University from irregularities, corruption and militancy.

The demand was made at the human chain held in front of Shilpakala Academy in the capital’s Segun Bagicha on Tuesday (October 26th) morning to take action and given exemplary punishment against two  trustees, Azim Uddin and MA Qasim, for such rampant corruption in an institution like North South University and turning the university into a militant factory in the interest of the state.

According to the human chain, North South University’s top people buying low-priced land at high prices, commission in exchange for a contract with a developer company, illegally buy luxury cars for 9 members of the board of trustees illegally from student tuition fees, accused of embezzling Tk 100,000 for seating allowance , Receiving same allowances even after do online meetings, by breaking the rules, FDR of Tk. 408 crore from the university fund in their own account, Complaints have been lodged in various government departments about various irregularities and militancy, including the admission of several students, disobeying the directives of the Grants Commission.

Besides, MA Qasim and Azim Uddin were blamed for presenting information about the militant involvement of this organization. Evidence of the involvement of alumni and students of North South in various militant attacks in the country has been highlighted. Giving examples, its said, the university is still patronising militancy. Nafis Imtiaz, who was convicted in the murder of blogger Rajeeb, was readmitted to the university after 10 years.

At the same time, theys claimed that despite repeated complaints to various responsible departments of the government, no effective action has been taken yet. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) demanded an immediate trial of the culprits.

Advocate Mohiuddin Jewel, chairman of the Law and Human Rights Foundation, the organization’s adviser Dr. Sufi Sagar Sams, Bangladesh Newspaper (Media) Employees Federation President Matiur Rahman Talukder, Executive Director of the Law and Human Rights Protection Foundation. Ujjwal Hossain Murad, Chairman of Bangladesh Environment and Human Rights Implementation Society M Ibrahim Patwari, journalist leader Kalimulla Iqbal and others also address at the human chain.

At the end of the human chain, a memorandum containing 8 points was submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Their demands are: Ban and arrest of two trustees of North South University Azim Uddin Ahmed and MA Qasim, proper investigation into all financial irregularities and corruption and confiscation of bank accounts of members of the syndicate including Azim-Qasim, the main accused of forgery of PM’s signature . Shahjahan’s speedy trial, the release of Azim-Qasim and members of their syndicate from all financial institutions, Appropriate explanation for re-admission of convicted accused Nafis Imtiaz in blogger Rajib murder case and investigation of sponsorship of militancy, management of the university in accordance with the rules of University Grants Commission UGC.

The human chain was attended by more than five hundred people including human rights activists, students, parents and conscious citizens.
