BNP making people confused about bill on EC formulation: Obaidul Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said the BNP, which failed in the field of politics, has now resorted to ill-efforts to make the country’s people confused about the proposed law on the Election Commission formulation.

“Apart from this law, like the past, they (BNP leaders) are trying to make the elections and the electoral process questionable,” he said in a statement.

Qauder, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said in continuation of that, the BNP is staging new dramas of conspiracy by investing a huge amount of money and hiring lobbyists abroad aiming to make the electoral process questionable but the drought of the party’s dying river has not ended.

“So they (BNP leaders) are talking like perplexed ones,” he added.

Calling upon the BNP leaders to refrain from making false and misleading remarks, the AL general secretary said, “For a long time, there has been a demand from all quarters for a law on the EC formulation.”

Considering the demand of the all political parties and civil society of the country, he said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina government formulated the proposed “Appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners Bill-2022” and the cabinet has already approved the draft of law.

He said the initiative to enact this law has been lauded by various political parties and civil society.

Quader said the bill has already placed in the parliament and once the bill is passed, it will bring a permanent solution to the complexities over the formation of the EC.

As per parliamentary procedure, the bill placed in Parliament has been sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Law Ministry for scrutiny, he said.

From there, the bill will come up in the parliament with recommendations of the committee and it will be finalised through discussion in the House, the minister said.

“This is the constitutional process of making a law,” he added.

Quader hoped that the bill would be passed in the parliament through due parliamentary procedures and constitutional norms.

He alleged that without knowing it properly, the BNP leaders continue to make all kinds of misleading remarks and propaganda about the bill with an intention to make the EC formulation process questionable.
