Eminent singer Sharmila Chakraborty’s Rabindra Sangeet CD album released on Kalim Sharafi’s birth centenary

Legendary artist-organizer Kaleem Sharafi’s birth centenary was on May 8. He was born on this day in 1924 in Khayradihi village under Siuri Sadar subdivision of West Bengal’s Birbhum district. On his hundredth birthday, various events were going on across the city. But the day was made a little different by his worthy student-disciple Sharmila Chakraborty.

Sharmila released a special Rabindra Sangeet CD album of 10 songs on the occasion of Guru’s 100th birthday. The music of this album named ‘Chir Sundar’ has been composed by Agniv Banerjee, former head of music department of Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, India.  Commentary: Sukumar Ghosh. On May 6, Christy Creations released the songs on CD and digitally.

Artist Sharmila Chakraborty was born in Faridpur at maternal uncle’s house.  Everyone in this house practiced music more or less. As a result, naturally, the first exposure to music came from the mother. But the one who started his musical education in his early life was the elder maternal uncle Sangeet Guru Sri Karunamay Adhikari.

After that Sharmila moved away from music due to studies, marriage, family and above all apathy. After a long break, he returned to the world of music by enrolling in Dhaka’s ‘Sangeet Bhavan’.

While contacted Sharmila said,  “I found a new direction in my life by returning to Sangeet Bhavan after a break. Through which I have been able to make music an integral part of my life. The principal of this institution was the respected legend Kalim Sharafi.

Rabindranath taught us how to move forward in any situation of life. This album is my tribute to that education, “ Sharmila added.

Sharmila Chakraborty is a listed artist of Bangladesh Television and a member of the Executive Committee of Bangladesh Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Sangstha. He is associated with teaching at a university college as a professor in his professional life.

She is also associated with writing. In 2014, a book entitled ‘How to End Violence Against Women’ was published, jointly authored by Sharmila Chakraborty and Parvez Babul as part of Ekushey Book Fair of Bangla academy.

It must be mentioned here that the veteran musician Kalim Sharafi died of hypertension and diabetes at his residence in the capital on November 2, 2010 at 11:55 am.
